About Aaron
“One of the smartest and most effective legislators on the Board”
– San Francisco Chronicle
Called “whip-smart and fearless” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Aaron Peskin has a record of taking on this city’s greatest challenges – and getting results.
Aaron Peskin is a lifelong public servant and pragmatic progressive who has been elected three times by his colleagues to be the President of the Board of Supervisors. He is easily the most prolific legislator on the Board of Supervisors, and has passed groundbreaking legislation to build affordable housing, protect renters and fund transit and pedestrian safety.
He has voted to approve and increase housing capacity by over 100,000 new homes in the city, and been one of our strongest champions for affordable housing – from when he passed the city’s first inclusionary housing law requiring developers to include affordable housing in their market-rate projects, to creating a citywide plan for rent-controlled in-law units, to leading the passage of Prop A earlier this year, the affordable housing bond that will provide affordable homes for 4,500 working San Franciscans.
He was the first leader to call for the creation of a Law Enforcement Emergency Joint Task Force to combat our drug overcrisis, citing public safety as a core progressive value. He consistently voted for additional funds for law enforcement, emergency action in the Tenderloin and brought community ambassadors and multi-lingual police foot patrols to his district.
Aaron is also the city’s fiercest protector of our neighborhoods. He has protected neighborhood small business corridors from chain stores and speculators, fought against evictions, and protected the rights of neighbors to have a voice in the issues that impact them. He believes we can meet our housing goals without destroying the neighborhoods we love.
Representing District 3, which includes Chinatown, North Beach, Telegraph Hill and many of the city’s most iconic locations, Aaron has made sure we don’t build walls on our public waterfront or bulldoze the charm and history that makes San Francisco the most beautiful city in America.
In addition to representing our diverse communities on the Board of Supervisors, Aaron has been a lifelong environmental activist, working with Native American tribes to protect vital water sources and organizations such as the Sierra Club and Audobon Society to help create a sustainable future for all Californians. He serves as a Commissioner on both the Bay Conservation & Development Commission and the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority, and was previously on the California Coastal Commission.

Aaron lives on Telegraph Hill with his wife, Nancy Shanahan, where he got his start organizing the neighborhood association around tree planting. He is also a member of the South End Rowing Club, and gets up before dawn most mornings to swim in the San Francisco Bay. Finally, Aaron is proudly in recovery, and recently celebrated 3 years sober.
